Writing a novel has been a big dream of mine for a long time. It’s just one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do since as far back as I can remember. Even though it’s been a dream of mine for a while, I didn’t really get serious about writing until this year. I started my blog sometime last November but really started focusing and making sure I was writing on a regular basis sometime around April. Aside from my blog, one of my goals was to write a novel by the end of the year (first draft of course). This morning I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts and came across NaNoWriMo.
What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. This event takes place in the month of November. The goal is to write a 50,000-page novel from November 1st to November 30th. Their mission statement straight from their website is: “National Novel Writing Month believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.”
I just signed up this morning, but from the looks of it, the intent is to write every single day. This website provides support and ways to connect with other writers. Writing a novel can be a real struggle, and NaNoWriMo tries to make it fun and give you the encouragement to unleash your creativity.
Why am I joining NaNoWriMo?
Like I said before, writing a novel and becoming a published author has always been a goal of mine. When I think about my dream job, the first thing that always comes to mind is Writer. Right now I am kind of living that dream through my blogging, but I want more. I absolutely love to write fiction and always seem to have a ton of ideas that never seem to make it to the paper. I think I need this challenge to give me a little push and hold me accountable. That’s actually what Blogtober is doing for me as well!
I actually did finish the first chapter of a novel I started writing… months ago LOL. I reread it and it’s definitely not my favorite. I’m pretty critical about my work and am trying to break the habit of disliking everything I write. Since NaNoWriMo is all about writing, not revising and editing, I think it’s the perfect thing for me!
How can you join the challenge?
Easy, just go to sign up here!
Once you do sign up, make sure you add me as your writing buddy! We can keep each other accountable and motivated. 🙂
Have you ever participated in NaNoWriMo before? What was the outcome?
